2020 Alta Murrieta Sinkhole Repair

Sinkhole Location, 2020
Project Scope: Emergency repair to failed storm drain pipe and road surface on Alta Murrieta Drive, north of Murrieta Hot Springs Road and west of shopping center.

Cause of Sinkhole: The sinkhole was caused by the failure of an old 72” corrugated steel pipe storm drain that was installed several decades ago prior to the incorporation of the City. Steel will rust over the years which is why the City currently utilizes concrete instead of steel for our storm drain pipe. In this case, the bottom of the pipe rusted through resulting in the soil around the pipe being carried downstream and eventually resulting in a sinkhole at the surface of the roadway. By replacing the steel with concrete, we expect a lifespan of over 100 years.

Repair Schedule:
Now - 05/11/2020: Installation of replacement 72" concrete storm drain.
5/12 - 05/20/2020: Complete roadway repairs and reopen road.

2019 Citywide Slurry Seal Project

Project Scope: On approximately 19 million square feet (approximately 50% of all residential* streets in the city limits of Murrieta) of City-maintained residential streets repair minor pavement defects with asphalt patching, apply crack seal to cracks on pavement, remove traffic striping and pavement markers, apply Type I Rubber Polymer Modified Slurry to pavement, then reapply traffic striping and pavement markers.

Cost: $3,136,458

Funding Source: Measure A and Gas Tax funds

Approvals: City Council to award contract to selected vendor at October 15, 2019 Council Meeting

*The City only applies slurry seal to residential streets. Residential streets that are private, or in gated communities, or are otherwise non-conforming to City residential street standards are not maintained by the City and will not be included in the scope of this slurry seal project.

**No requests to add or remove streets to the current project will be accepted. The intent is to include the remaining 50% of City-maintained residential streets in the 2021 Citywide Slurry Seal project, and then divide all residential streets into approximately 4 sectors that will be placed on a rotation of smaller slurry projects that will be completed every 2 years. This will result in a slurry seal being applied to all eligible streets on a consistent schedule every 5-7 years.

  • Due to the number of different variables that impact scheduling, schedules for the project will be released 1 to 2 weeks at a time. All residents will receive at LEAST 72 hours advanced notice via NO PARKING signs placed on streets to receive slurry and door hanger notices that will be hand delivered. 
  • NO streets will be added without advanced notification. However, streets can be removed, and rescheduled for a later date, due to inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances. NO PARKING signs will be removed if the slurry application of a street has been postponed and streets will be rescheduled several weeks out and residents will be notified again of the date their street will receive slurry.
