[ARCHIVED] City Prepares Hillsides for Rainy Season

Tenaja Burned area news

Murrieta City Council has approved a local emergency resolution on Tuesday allowing work to begin immediately to mitigate potential runoff and debris flow in the Tenaja burn area.

We have been busy preparing for this week’s rains by assessing and clearing drainage channels. Gravel bags are being placed Monday in impacted areas to reduce debris flow. And over 10 acres of a specialized hydromulch, a Bonded Fiber Matrix, will be applied next week on high-risk slopes. The hydromulch is designed to minimize erosion, and includes a native seed component to help re-vegetate the slopes. Over the next few weeks we will also be placing temporary railing and fencing in several key spots at the base of burned hillsides.

This work follows an extensive assessment by erosion control experts who identified high-and-medium-priority regions in the burn area. About a dozen Copper Canyon residents attended a City information meeting on November 14 to review the recommendations, which were presented to the public at the Tuesday Council meeting. You can view the Council report here.

As we enter rainy season, we want to remind all residents to make sure their phones are registered at AlertRivCo (rivcoready.org/AlertRivCo). This is a primary emergency notification system and cell/VOIP phones require that you manually register. Traditional landlines are automatically registered with AlertRivCo.
