Fireworks cause thousands of serious injuries and devastating fires every year. Nearly a third of those impacted are children. With years of drought creating brittle landscapes and the ever-increasing risk of unintended fires, Murrieta Fire & Rescue and the Murrieta Police have joined forces to rally against this dangerous and illegal activity.
It is against the law for individuals to use, possess or sell any type of personal fireworks in Murrieta. It is also illegal to buy fireworks elsewhere and bring them into the City. A fireworks citation runs $1,000. In addition, if you or your child cause a fire due to fireworks-related activity, you may be responsible for emergency response and firefighting costs.
Fire Chief David Lantzer emphasizes the critical role we all play in keeping our community safe.
“Please model safe behavior and share this information widely,” Lantzer explains. “And if you see illegal fireworks, let us know. We are counting on the public to help us keep Murrieta safe and fire-free this holiday.”
To report fireworks violations, use the non-emergency dispatch number at (951) 696-3615 or visit www.MurrietaCA./gov/fireworks. Provide a specific address if possible. Do not call 9-1-1 unless it is a true emergency.
“Teens and young adults are especially at risk,” adds Police Chief Tony Conrad, “as they may not be aware of local laws and significant fines. By making sure the children and young adults understand the dangers and the penalties involved in illegal firework, you can help ensure it never becomes an issue.”
Murrieta Fire & Rescue and Murrieta Police encourage residents to be safe, be legal and have fun by viewing fireworks only at sanctioned local events. The City plans to host a professional fireworks display on July 1, 2021, from the Los Alamos Park area, weather permitting. Please watch the City's Facebook page for additional information as we get closer.
