Increased Local Grant Allotment will Benefit City, Non-Profits
The City of Murrieta expects to receive approximately $590k in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds in the next funding cycle, an increase of 82% from the prior cycle. Of that amount, up to $88,500 can go to non-profits and other public agencies. The remaining is designated to City projects and programs. Currently, the City is using CDBG funds for its Back-to-Business grant program, which assists businesses impacted by COVID.
Mayor Gene Wunderlich explains how a change in the City’s entitlement status brought more money to local projects and programs.
“We have a longstanding partnership with the County to bring these important federal funds to our community,” explains Mayor Wunderlich. “This year, the City and County, once again in partnership, were able to make some technical changes to our CDBG status, which brings a lot more funds to those in need. It’s a win, win, at a time when it’s needed most.”
Non-profit groups and public agencies wishing to apply must meet CDBG criteria, with programs that benefit low-to-moderate income individuals, seniors, adults with disabilities, those experiencing homeless, or victims of domestic abuse. CDBG grants are not issued to individuals.
In addition, the City will be looking at specific benefits to the Murrieta community in accordance with the City Council’s funding priorities. These include a focus on addressing food insecurity, supporting women and children, youth development, and domestic violence issues.
CDBG grant applications must be received by the City on or before October 30, 2020, and may be dropped off at the front desk in the City Hall Lobby during business hours.
Visit www.MurrietaCA.gov/cdbg for additional information on criteria and a link to the full application. For additional questions on the program and eligibility, please contact Louie Lacasella, in the City Manager’s Office at 951-461-6008, or email [email protected].
