[ARCHIVED] Council Favors Balance with Short-Term Rentals

STR Workshop News

It’s a hot topic, and the City of Murrieta is committed to staying ahead of the curve when it comes to short-term vacation rentals. At our February 18, 2020, City Council Workshop, close to 100 residents and property owners came to learn about the issue, and many shared their thoughts.

For owners, short-term rentals may be a key source of income or a way to meet new people. Yet for an unlucky few neighbors, STR activity may significantly degrade their quality of life. Most people we have talked to support regulating this growing industry--and finding a balance that works for residents, business owners and the City.

With this in mind, Council Council has asked staff to examine some of the best practices used to track and regulate short-term rentals and return to the Council with recommendations.

“We know that most short-term rental strive to be good neighbors,” says Assistant City Manager Ivan Holler, “but if you live nextdoor to the one bad apple, it’s a problem.”

After exploring options, staff will bring recommendations to the Planning Commission and then back to City Council for consideration. We will keep you posted.
