Parks and Recreation Month - Photo Contest

Each July, cities, districts, and numerous agencies across the United States find ways for their communities to explore everything local parks and recreation have to offer from playgrounds to rec centers, sports leagues, summer camps and more during July is Parks and Recreation Month!! This year has proved to be more challenging than ever before. This nation, this world, is facing a pandemic, systemic racism, unprecedented numbers of homeless, hunger, unemployment, and economic challenges beyond anything imaginable. We’ve all had to pivot to find alternate ways of teaching our students, getting in touch, caring for one another, and even recreating. This is why, for this July, the City of Murrieta wants to find out what recreation means to you by hosting a photo contest. It could be anything from a favorite memory at an event, a milestone reached in a particular City-run class or program, your favorite hiking trail, or even an architectural feature unique to Murrieta.

Photographers are encouraged to submit high-resolution photographs fitting the theme of “Reopening Recreation.” The theme integrates the daily recreation lifestyle of residents engaged in events/activities that may have been restricted during the pandemic. An example would be a photo of a baseball game, knowing that at one point, youth sports weren't allowed. Staff is looking for your perspective on life in Murrieta as it relates to Parks and Recreation. We encourage images that depict the vibrancy, vitality, and livability of our City as well as images with people in them, either from afar or close up.

Connect with Others

Although we’re all social distancing physically, as humans we need to stay connected emotionally. Try one or two of these out every day.

  • Call a friend or relative you haven’t spoken to in a while to check in.
  • Write a letter.
  • Facetime.
  • Support a local restaurant. Many restaurants are still open for takeout or delivery orders.
  • Support your favorite joints and order food for pick up or try out Doordash or Ubereats and have it brought to you.
  • Take breaks from watching, reading, or listening to news stories, including social media. Hearing about the pandemic repeatedly can be upsetting.
  • Take care of your body. Take deep breaths, stretch, or meditate.
  • Try to eat healthy, well-balanced meals, exercise regularly, get plenty of sleep.
  • Make time to unwind.
  • Connect with others. Talk with people you trust about your concerns and how you are feeling.
  • Mindfulness is a type of meditation in which you focus on being intensely aware of what you’re sensing and feeling in the moment, without interpretation or judgment. Practicing mindfulness involves breathing methods, guided imagery, and other practices to relax the body and mind and help reduce stress.
