Course Descriptions
Private swim lessons, new semi-private swim lessons, and adult swim lessons are available. Visit the Aquatics Office for more information or download the Swim Lesson Schedule above.
Swim lesson levels and descriptions are generic and actual class instruction may not cover all skills listed in the description due to swimmer's ability. All course instruction could be modified to accommodate the skill level of the class.
Infant & Pre-School Aquatics Program (IPAP)
This course is for ages 6 months to 3 years. Parent/adult accompaniment in the water is required. This program is designed to give parents information and techniques to help orient their child to the water and to supervise water activities in a safe manner. No diapers are allowed in this course; swim pants are preferred.
Skills taught will include:
- Bubble blowing
- Front and back floats
- Kicking
- Underwater exploration
- Water adjustment
Toddler
This course is for ages 3 to 5 - classes will be limited to four participants. This course is designed to be a preschool age child's first experience in a pool without a caretaker. The course introduces swimming and water safety skills. Students must be able to listen and follow directions.
Toddler class sizes will be smaller to help bridge the skill gap at this age level.
Skills taught include:
- Age-appropriate safety topics
- Alternate arm strokes
- Bubble blowing
- Front and back floats
- Glides with support
- Kicking
- Underwater exploration
- Water adjustment
Level One - Water Exploration
This course is for ages 5 and up. This course is designed to follow the Toddler class for children ages 5 years and older.
Participants must be able to:
- Blow bubbles
- Climb out of the pool without help
- Front and back float unassisted for 5 seconds
- Listen and follow directions
- Submerge face without using goggles
Skills taught include:
- Age-appropriate safety topics
- Bobbing
- Entering the water by jumping in
- Fully submerge and retrieve items
- Tuck floats
Level Two - Primary Skills
This course teaches participants elementary skills that enable the swimmer to move comfortably through the water and improve upon skills learned in Toddler and Level One. The front crawl will be taught and the back crawl will be introduced. Students will also learn basic water safety rules and become familiar with ways to get help in a water emergency.
Level Three - Stroke Readiness
This program is designed to give students success with the fundamental skills that they learned in the Level Two course and to introduce new skills such as rhythmic breathing, elementary backstroke, and treading water. The swimmer should be able to swim approximately 15 feet and float on his/her stomach before enrolling.
Level Four - Stroke Development
This program reinforces the skills learned in Level Three. The breaststroke and sidestroke will be introduced. The child should be able to swim one width of the pool using rhythmic breathing before enrolling.
