Election Information

November 8, 2016 City Council Candidate Election Information

The City of Murrieta will be holding an election on November 8, 2016, for the purpose of electing two
City Council members for the expiring terms.   

The nomination period is July 18, 2016, through August 12, 2016, or through August 17, 2016, if any incumbent does not file for office. The polls will be open on Election Day from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Primary Election

The Statewide Primary Election will be held on June 7, 2016.  For more information regarding this election please contact the Riverside County Registrar of Voters Office.

General Election

The City of Murrieta consolidates with the Riverside County Registrar of Voters Office for all municipal elections. The City Clerk serves as the elections official and the City Clerk's Office is responsible for all candidates' filings, the issuance and acceptance of nomination papers, City measures and publication of all legal notices as well as campaign and conflict of interest filings required by the Fair Political Practices Commission.

The general municipal elections for the City are held on the first Tuesday in November of even-numbered years for the purpose of electing City Council members or placing special measures and bond issues before the community. Special elections may be called by the City Council for the purpose of referendum/initiative or for recall

City Council Elections

City Council members are elected at-large to serve four-year overlapping terms. In order to broaden the opportunities for public service, no elected official of the City of Murrieta or any other political subdivision of the City of Murrieta shall serve more than two consecutive terms in office. Terms are considered consecutive if they are at least four years apart. The next general election for the City of Murrieta will be on November 8, 2016, for the purpose of electing two City Council members for the expiring terms.

City Council members also serve as voting members on the City’s ancillary districts and boards, which include:

  • Murrieta Community Services District
  • Murrieta Fire District
  • Murrieta Library Board
  • Murrieta Redevelopment Successor Agency
  • Murrieta Housing Authority
  • Murrieta Financing Authority

The positions of Mayor and Mayor Pro-Tem are one-year terms, with requirements outlined by the rules of procedure for City Council meetings and the rotation of presiding officers, which occurs at the first meeting in December of each year Resolution No. 16-3517.
